Here at GillsWood, we pride ourselves on creating beautiful and uniquely spectacular pieces of art, ranging from items such as pens, Lightsabers and many more items. All my items are made to order, I believe in quality over quantity.
My Story
I am a self taught woodworker, I first discovered my love of working with wood when I was a wide eyed young boy, a young boy who would watch his Dad build things out of wood, he would build garden items such as Planters, sheds and decking.
Because off this I developed a love for wood working. In School I studied design and technology, this was my first taste of "finer woodworking" where I began creating furniture for my very first Customer, my dog HAHA.
The more I experiemented, the more i found my passion for working with wood, specifially wood carving and wood turning, I have an absolute love for wood turning on a laith. which is actually the how i create my pens aswell as some off my more invovled creations such as Lightsabers, Yes I am an Nerd and proud off it.
Carving has truly allowed me to explore and embrace my creative side, rarely can I go a day without picking up a hammer and chissel and creating something either silly or fantastic.
I love creating anything with wood, though I can create projects with metal, I find metal to cold and empty while Wood has warmth and an abundance off character, whether that is a unigue colour or a fantastic grain.
over the last 15 years I have heard many people say "you can't use this type of wood to make this" well i take great personal satisfaction in proving people wrong. any types/species off wood can be used for anything, you just need to know how to use it and how to treat it properly.
I have experimented with many different types off wood species, I have many different favourites but if I was to choose my preffered wood, then i would choose Sapele, being a mahogany, it is a naturally beautiful wood.
